Europe stares into the mirror and sees a success story.

• Capitalist.
• Free.
• Legalistic.
• Stylish.
• Stable.
• Culturally superior — or so it believes.

But from the underbrush comes a whisper.

Not a breeze. Not a bird.

A man.

Alfons Scholing.

And behind him, children tremble.

Not from cold war echoes, but from the heat of a truth unspoken.

Not from history, but from the looming forces encircling them —

the other side of the coin.

🔥 The Quiet Accumulation of War Chests

While Europe debates nitrogen levels, pensions, and privacy laws,

military budgets are swelling worldwide — both in shadow and in daylight.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI):

“Global military expenditures surged to $2.44 trillion in 2024 — the steepest rise in decades.”

The United States led with $916 billion. But also: China: $296 billion India: $82 billion Russia: $109 billion, despite sanctions Iran and Turkey: advancing through proxies, drone fleets, and cyberwarfare African powers — Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria — repositioning with Eastern support

“Europe lacks strategic autonomy and remains structurally dependent on U.S. capabilities in multi-front conflict scenarios.”

So I ask you, Mr. Putin,

President Xi (yes, that’s your name, thank you memory),

President Raisi, Lula, Ramaphosa —

What do you really see when you look at Europe?

A continent with agency?

Or a frozen theater set for the next act in a play it no longer writes?

Don’t take my word for it.

Do you think these powers come to admire our cathedrals and symphonies?

Or to restructure?

To redistribute?

And then I find myself,

late at night,

the soft murmur of the evening news in the background:

“Will they come to liberate us… or replace us?”

🌍 Two Sides, One Future

For ten years I’ve written.

As a loner.

As a scribe of twilight.

Not to provoke war.

But to remind the world — and Europe itself —

that this continent is more than soft power and museums.

That Europe still breathes, even if trauma runs deep.

To Mr. Putin: Yes, we know you think in centuries.

To Xi Jinping: Your Belt & Road runs right over our heads — but who guides the moral compass?

To Iran: Your revolutionary fire is known — but every fire meets its wind.

To all of you:

There is a Europe that no longer waits for instructions from Washington.

There is a Europe that must now reinvent itself.

Because if not?

My trembling children will not just fear your tanks,

but the realization that their freedom was merely a footnote

in the story of civilizations that forgot themselves.

Modieus.

Stabiel.

Maar vanuit het struikgewas klinkt een fluistering.

Geen briesje, geen bij.

Een man.

Terwijl Europese naties discussiëren over stikstof, pensioenen en privacywetgeving,

worden militaire budgetten wereldwijd opgevoerd in stilte, in brede daglichtverslagen.

Het Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) toont: “Wereldwijde militaire uitgaven stegen in 2024 tot $2.44 biljoen. De sterkste stijging in decennia.” De VS, altijd de spil, met $916 miljard (2024). Maar ook: China: $296 miljard. India: $82 miljard. Rusland: een forse stijging naar $109 miljard, ondanks sancties. Iran en Turkije bouwen hun defensieve netwerken uit via proxies, dronetechnologie en cyberinfrastructuur. Afrikaanse grootmachten als Nigeria, Egypte en Algerije herpositioneren zich — met steun uit het oosten.

🌍 Twee Kanten, Eén Toekomst

Tien jaar lang schreef ik.

Als een zonderling.

Als een archiefbewaker van het Avondland.

Niet om oorlog te zoeken.

Maar om te zeggen:

Europa is meer dan soft power en museums.

Europa leeft nog — al is het trauma diep.

Aan Poetin zeg ik: Ja, wij weten dat jullie strategisch denken in eeuwen.

Aan Xi Jinping: Uw Belt & Road gaat recht over ons hoofd, maar wie leidt het morele kompas?

Aan Iran: Uw revolutionaire vurigheid is bekend, maar kent ook grenzen.

Aan iedereen:

Er is een Europa dat niet wacht op instructies van Washington.

Een Europa dat zich opnieuw moet uitvinden.

En als dat niet gebeurt?

Dan zullen mijn kindertjes niet alleen bibberen van angst.

Maar van het besef dat hun vrijheid slechts een voetnoot was,

in de geschiedenis van beschavingen die zichzelf vergaten.
